Understanding. There are two sorts of understanding, it seems. There is understanding of music and mathematics and Italian, and that proceeds smoothly enough, like a walk on a good gravel path. And there is the other sort of understanding, which is shifting sands and stormy currents, and has glimpses of beauty and terror, and does not translate into words very easily.
